Why Coastal Conditions Are Harder on Furniture

Garden furniture anywhere in the UK has to cope with rain, but a seaside patio plays by different rules. Salt carried on the wind is abrasive and mildly corrosive, settling into every joint, hinge and weave. Add gusting onshore breezes, higher humidity, strong reflected sunlight off water, and airborne sand that scours finishes, and you have an environment that will humble anything built for a sheltered suburban garden.

The practical upshot is that coastal furniture needs to be chosen with the same mindset as boat fittings: materials that tolerate salt, fixings that will not seize, and weights that stay put when the wind gets up. Get that right and your patio will last a decade or more. Get it wrong and you will be replacing split frames and rusted bolts every other spring.

Teak, Rattan and Recycled Plastic: The Three Reliable Choices

These three families of material cover almost every coastal garden, and each suits a slightly different budget and style.

Teak is the traditional seaside hardwood. Its natural oils make it naturally resistant to rot, salt and insect attack, which is why it has been used on boat decks for generations. Look for furniture made from sustainably grown plantation teak with tight, straight grain, and check that fixings are stainless steel rather than mild steel. Left untreated, teak weathers to a soft silver-grey that suits a coastal setting beautifully. If you prefer the original honey colour, a light clean and an annual application of teak oil will bring it back. Teak is heavy, which is a genuine advantage in an exposed spot.

Synthetic rattan — woven polyethylene or similar over an aluminium frame — gives you the look of traditional wicker without the brittleness. Real cane will not survive a salty, damp garden for long, so avoid it entirely outdoors. Good synthetic weave is UV-stabilised and colour-fast, and an aluminium frame will not rust. Test the weight before you buy: a lightweight set will skitter across a patio in a winter gale unless you anchor it or move it indoors.

Recycled plastic furniture, often made from reclaimed agricultural or household waste, is the low-maintenance workhorse. It does not rot, splinter, crack or need painting, and salt air has no effect on it. It is heavier than it looks, which helps in windy gardens, and it cleans with nothing more than soapy water. The trade-off is a chunkier, more utilitarian appearance, though the better ranges now mimic timber convincingly.

What to Avoid on an Exposed Patio

Some materials simply do not belong within a mile of the coast. Save yourself the disappointment.

• Untreated mild steel and chrome-plated frames. Both will pit and rust within a season or two, especially where the coating is scratched.
• Natural cane, willow and rattan. These absorb moisture, swell, split and grow mould.
• Cheap softwoods without a protective finish. Pine and similar will grey, warp and rot unless rigorously treated every year.
• Lightweight aluminium bistro sets. Fine on a balcony, hopeless on an open patio where the wind funnels.
• Painted finishes on metal. Chips expose bare metal, and salt finds every chip.

If you already own something unsuitable, do not despair — moving it to a sheltered corner or storing it in a shed from October to March will noticeably extend its life.

Cushions, Covers and the Salt Air Problem

Cushions are where coastal gardens are won or lost. Standard foam soaks up damp and turns musty within weeks.

Choose quick-drying foam or hollowfibre pads, which let water drain and air circulate. Covers should be solution-dyed acrylic or a similar marine-grade fabric — these resist UV fading, salt staining and mildew, and they dry fast after a shower. Look for removable, machine-washable covers with concealed zips, and check the stitching is UV-resistant too, as that is often the first thing to fail.

Wind is the other enemy. Loose cushions become missiles in a gust, so fit them with ties, Velcro strips or press studs that anchor them to the frame. Alternatively, choose a bench or chair with a gently lipped seat that holds cushions in place. A waterproof storage box kept on the patio makes it easy to gather cushions at the end of the day rather than carrying them through the house.

Parasols, Windbreaks and Anchoring Your Set-Up

A parasol in a coastal garden needs a base far heavier than you would use inland. A 25 kg base is a sensible minimum for a 2.5 m canopy, and 40 kg or more is wise on an exposed terrace. Fillable bases that you top up with water or sand are convenient but check the filled weight before buying — some are surprisingly light once assembled.

Consider a cantilever parasol, which can be rotated to block the sun without blocking your view, but only if the base is genuinely substantial. Crank mechanisms and tilt joints should be stainless steel or well-greased aluminium.

For screening, choose windbreak fabric rather than solid panels. Solid fencing creates turbulence on the leeward side, which can be worse than the original wind. Porous mesh lets some air through and calms the gusting considerably. Weave mesh through sturdy posts, and check tension after every winter storm.

Finally, think about where everything lives. A bench that can be dragged into a corner, a table with a central hole for a parasol, and a lockable storage bench for cushions and small items will make the whole patio far more usable through a British coastal year.

A Simple Seasonal Routine

Coastal furniture rewards a little attention. Rinse salt off frames and fixings with fresh water two or three times a year, particularly in spring after winter gales. Check bolts and hinges for corrosion and replace anything suspect with stainless steel. Clean covers with a mild soap solution rather than detergent, and let them dry fully before storing. Apply teak oil annually if you want to keep the colour, or leave it to silver naturally if you prefer the weathered look.

Do that, and your patio becomes what it should be: a place to sit with a cup of tea, watch the weather come in off the sea, and not worry about what the salt and wind are doing to the furniture behind you.
