Why Rockpooling Rewards the Careful

Few seaside pleasures match the moment a child lifts a frond of kelp and finds a shore crab scuttling beneath it. Rockpools are windows into a hidden world, and around the British coast they are wonderfully accessible: no boat, no permit, no expensive kit. But these small enclosed worlds are fragile. Twice a day the tide drains away, leaving their inhabitants to cope with baking sun, lashing rain, hungry gulls and plummeting oxygen levels. Everything there is tough, and everything there is easily harmed by a careless hand.

This guide is for beginners — families, curious adults, anyone who fancies a proper look at what the sea leaves behind. Follow it and you will see more, not less. Creatures handled well will still be there next time, and the pool will still be worth visiting.

Read the Tide Before You Leave the House

Tide tables are not optional; they are the most important planning you will do. Aim to arrive at low water, and give yourself a window of roughly two hours either side of it. Spring tides — the biggest ones, around the new and full moon — expose the widest stretch of shore and the best pools. Neap tides uncover far less, so if you are chasing something special, check which you have.

Choose a shore with a broad rocky platform and easy exit routes, and avoid headlands where the water can come round behind you. On flat beaches a rising tide can cut you off far from the steps, and it moves faster than it looks. Never turn your back on the sea for long: a single larger set of waves can arrive without warning.

Before you go, tell someone where you are heading and when you expect to be back. Check the wind — a strong onshore breeze pushes water towards you. If in doubt, come back another day. The pools are not going anywhere.

Dress for Wet, Sharp, Slippery Ground

Rockpooling is done on terrain designed to trip you up. Wet rock draped in seaweed is as slippery as ice, and barnacles, limpets and mussels will cut bare skin. Flip-flops and bare feet are a mistake.

• Footwear: wellington boots with a deep tread, or old trainers with good grip — something you do not mind soaking.
• Clothing: a windproof layer, a hat, and sun cream. Even on a grey day the light bouncing off water burns.
• Kit: a white tray or small clear tub (easier to see into than a bucket), a hand lens, and a torch for peering into crevices.
• Safety: a basic first aid kit, and a fully charged phone in a waterproof pouch.

Go with someone else, keep small children within arm's reach, and never put your hands into a gap you cannot see into. Watch out too for weever fish, which bury themselves in sandy pools and deliver a painful sting.

Handle Everything with Wet Hands

This is the rule beginners break most often, usually with the best intentions. A dry hand strips the protective mucus layer from a fish, a sea slug, a starfish or an anemone. That mucus is their armour — it guards against infection and stops them drying out. Wet your hands in the pool before you touch anything, and wet them again if they dry.

Better still, do not touch at all. Much of what lives in a pool can be watched by sitting still and waiting. Fish will drift back out of the corners you chased them into, and crabs will resume whatever they were doing.

When you do handle something, support it gently rather than hooking a leg or a claw. Please do not prise limpets off their home scar; a limpet returned to the wrong spot, or levered off at all, will very often die. Do not poke anemones — they close, and closing costs them energy they cannot spare. If you keep anything in a tub, keep it shaded, for minutes rather than hours, and never mix predators with prey.

Put Every Stone Back Exactly as You Found It

The golden rule is simple: leave the shore as you found it. Every stone goes back the same way up, in the same place, snug against its neighbours.

Turn a stone over and its underside — dark, damp and sheltered — is suddenly exposed to sun, wind and gulls. Everything living there is adapted to the dark and will bake, dry out or be eaten. Roll stones rather than lifting, look quickly, then roll them back.

• Hold seaweed aside; do not tear it from the rock.
• Return creatures to the pool they came from, not the next one along; each has its own temperature, salinity and residents.
• Take nothing home alive, and leave empty shells and egg cases where they are — photograph anything unusual instead.

Take your litter home, including any fishing line or plastic you find. It is lethal to seabirds and marine life.

Respect the Wildlife Beyond the Pool

Rocky shores are often shared with seals, oystercatchers and cliff-nesting seabirds. Keep a generous distance, keep dogs on a lead, and if an animal is watching you, you are probably too close. Disturbance in the nesting season can cause parents to abandon eggs and chicks.

Wash your hands before eating, and cover any cuts before you start; seawater carries bacteria. If you find an injured bird or seal, keep back, keep others back, and contact a local wildlife rescue. Then go home, rinse your boots, and start planning your next low tide.
